Material sourcing is becoming a more detailed part of supplier evaluation for fashion accessory buyers. Two recent official industry updates point in the same direction: preferred material systems are gaining attention, while verified textile-to-textile recycling remains limited.
Textile Exchange published its Materials Benchmark Insights and Trends 2026 on September 22, 2026. The report covers 384 participating brands and retailers reporting in 2025. Within this participant group, 82% of cotton sourcing came from preferred production systems, compared with 38% of global cotton production volumes. The report also states that textile-to-textile feedstocks for cotton, polyester, nylon, manmade cellulosic fibers and wool remained only 2% of participants’ total raw material usage in both 2024 and 2025.
These figures describe reporting participants, who perform ahead of the wider industry, so buyers should not treat them as universal market averages.
Yarn Expo Autumn 2026 reported around 600 exhibitors from 14 countries and regions and nearly 22,000 visitors from 110 represented markets. Its official post-show release highlighted recycled, bio-based and regenerated fibers, as well as performance materials. Together, these signals suggest that buyers will increasingly need clear material specifications and evidence behind sustainability claims.
For custom scarves, hats, gloves, shawls and blankets, buyers can reduce misunderstandings by confirming the exact fiber composition, yarn or fabric construction, color requirements and finishing details before sampling. When a material claim is important, ask what documents can support it and whether the claim applies to the fiber, the finished product or only part of the supply chain.
A useful sourcing checklist includes:
Confirm fiber composition and permitted tolerances.
Approve a physical sample before bulk production.
Record color, hand feel, weight and performance requirements.
Ask for traceability or certification evidence when a claim is part of the purchase specification.
Align private-label, packaging and care-label information with the approved product.
Keep inspection criteria consistent from sampling through final quality control.
